Creating a focal point in any room is important since studies showed that the human eye doesn't like to be lost in many details, and rather needs to rest on something first then see the full picture!
That's why many designer make sure the room has an attention-seeking focal point; which could be a large painting behind the main sofa on the main wall in the room, or it could also be anything else like an elegant wall-covering, a sculpture, a strong rug, a furniture piece with strong patterns or colors, or even cushions.

The focal point needs to be visible the moment you enter a room for it to be effective and ease the person into the rest of the design.

Also, the focal point needs to capture the soul of the room and tie it together by having some of it's colors or patterns. That's why sometimes a focal point could be considered first and then the rest of the design elements may follow.
Not all designer follow the focal point rule, and that's ok. Some don't have any, and some consider more than one where there will be a primary focal point and other secondary ones, specially when the main one is not visible when you first enter the room.
But whatever is done it should look pleasing to the eye. That's the whole point!
