I love certain trends and anything modern and contemporary, I'm sure Nate too! But I personally believe what he means is that in being obsessed with following trends you may lose your character and who you are and that will reflect on your interiors making it like something in a trendy magazine, soulless and not personal.
Nate belongs to the school of thought that encourages personalizing the space and making it a reflection of who you are, which is what's prevailing now compared to designers in the 60s and 70s who used to impose their ideas and trends on clients and spaces.
Trends is this sense are just marketing. So, if what makes you happy exist in a trends then by all means follow it. If not, then don't over think things, do what you love, It's your home!
